Why I work with expats.
I grew up in Germany. I never had to choose between GKV and PKV, never had to explain to an insurer what “self-employed freelancer on a Blue Card” means in German insurance terms. Most Germans don't. But my friends, from London, São Paulo, Tel Aviv, half of Europe, did. And every single one of them had the same conversation with me over coffee: can you just look at this form and tell me what to do?
For a few years, I did exactly that for free. Then it became obvious: there's no independent broker doing this in English at a level that actually helps. Agents at the big firms speak English, but they sell one product. Comparison portals are in German and optimise for what pays them, not what fits you. That gap is what TheGoodBroker fills.
Today I run TheGoodBroker as a registered Versicherungsmakler under §34d GewO. That obligation is real: legally bound to advise in your interest, not the insurer's. I compare the German market, explain trade-offs in plain English, and stay reachable after the contract is signed. Most brokers don't.
What independent actually means.
The word “independent” gets thrown around a lot. Under German law, it has a specific meaning. And specific obligations.
