The story of ARAG private health insurance
The ARAG Group was founded in Düsseldorf in 1935 by the publisher and lawyer Heinrich Faßbender as a legal expenses insurer. It entered private health insurance in 1984 by taking over the Bavaria Krankenversicherung in Munich, which it renamed ARAG Krankenversicherung in 1990. The group converted into ARAG Holding SE and ARAG SE in 2011, and in 2017 it sold its life insurance business to concentrate on property and casualty insurance and health. In 2025 its health insurer grew from 107,453 to 124,401 people with full cover. By its own figures, the whole group has around 6,500 employees (2026) and is Germany's largest family-owned insurer.
