History
The story of AXA private health insurance
AXA's German health insurer was founded in Cologne in 1962 as the Union Krankenversicherung, which AXA itself calls the basis of today's company. By 1997 it traded as Colonia Krankenversicherung, part of the Colonia group, a Cologne insurer founded in 1839. After the merger of AXA and UAP, Colonia became part of the AXA Group in 1997, and the health insurer was renamed AXA Colonia Krankenversicherung at the end of the 1990s. Since October 2001, when all of the group's German companies took on the AXA brand, it has carried its present name, AXA Krankenversicherung AG. Since July 2008 it has also served civil servants through its DBV branch. In 2025 it insured 816,046 people with full cover and took €4,039.3 million in premiums.
